Something to Chalk About
In partnership with Take Care Tahoe and Truckee Trails Foundation, the Town of Truckee trialed a chalk stenciling trail etiquette message campaign along the Legacy Trail in the summer of 2023. From educational “share the path” and “keep right” reminders to more tongue-in-cheek messages like “friends don’t let friends block trails” and “it’s okay to be shy, but if you’re about to pass, say hi,” the goal of the campaign was to reduce trail user conflicts and collisions on paved paths in the region.
The campaign launched with a list of 20 messages, including straightforward instructions, funny reminders, and Spanish-language messages. To help gauge the impact of the messaging, the initial messages were applied with temporary chalk paint. Positive feedback was received, and a summer 2024 campaign is being considered.
