2040 General Plan

A General Plan serves as a blueprint for the community in that it outlines the Town’s policy of acceptable land uses. It establishes goals, purposes, zoning and activities allowed on each land parcel to provide compatibility and continuity to the entire region as well as each individual neighborhood.  It reflects an environmentally sustainable approach to planning that balances the need for adequate infrastructure, housing, and economic vitality while maintaining and preserving existing communities, agricultural areas, and open spaces. 

After 5 years of planning and hard work, the 2040 Truckee General Plan was approved by the Truckee Town Council on May 9, 2023.  Many of the new policies and action items in this plan tackle solutions to issues that weren’t as relevant when the previous 2025 General Plan was developed such as Climate Change, Mobility and Fuels Reduction, Fire Prevention & Evacuation.

Is a General Plan Required?

California state law requires each city and county to adopt a general plan that consist of seven plan elements. The General Plan is a living document, and the State recognizes that from time to time, it must be amended to update information and policies or comply with State regulations.
