Gas meters in Truckee must be protected from falling, sliding, and accumulating snow. Unless a gas meter is installed in a protected location such as under an engineered deck, a gas meter shed shall be provided.
In general, meters shall not be installed on snow-shedding sides of buildings. In the event that it cannot, the gas meter shall be designed and built and built with accordingly.
The gas company (Southwest Gas) governs the requirements for gas meter installations, please contact them for information on pre-approved design options. Alternatively, the Town will consider any other engineered design. For any other engineered design, a new set of plans must be submitted to the Town for approval. Plans must bear the stamp of a California registered engineer or licensed architect.
The shed shall be designed for 1.4 times the ground snow load.
On any new installation or reconnecting the service of an existing installation, the gas meter shall be protected. Please note: The Town building inspector will not tag the gas piping installation for a meter set or re-connection unless and until the meter is adequately protected.
