[ARCHIVED] Fire Hazard Severity Zone Update

A large cloud of smoke coming from a mountain side.

The Town of Truckee is ready to engage with the community regarding the recent updates to the Fire Hazard Severity Zones (FHSZ) as recommended by CAL FIRE. These updates, released to the Town in February 2025, mark the first significant revision since 2007 and reflect changes in fire risk assessments within the region.

Understanding the Updates

The updated FHSZ map provides a comparative view between the current zones and the newly recommended designations. Residents can utilize an interactive slider on the Town's FHSZ webpage to toggle between the current 2007 and recommended 2025 zone classifications, offering a clear visual representation of the changes.

Town's Obligations and Options

In response to CAL FIRE's recommendations, the Town of Truckee is mandated to:

  • Public Review and Comment: Make the updated FHSZ information available for public review and comment by March 12, 2025.
  • Ordinance Adoption: Adopt the fire hazard severity zones by ordinance by June 10, 2025.

While the Town has the discretion to designate additional areas as higher hazard zones based on substantial evidence, it is prohibited from reducing the hazard level of any area identified by the State Fire Marshal.

Community Involvement

Public participation is an essential part of this process. Residents are encouraged to review the proposed FHSZ updates and provide feedback. Comments can be submitted via email to FHSZupdate@townoftruckee.gov.

To help maximize the availability of information related to FHSZ update a community informational meeting is scheduled for March 12th from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at the Town Council Chambers.  At this meeting participants will be able to learn what the zones mean for Truckee and ask questions from local office of emergency services staff, town planners, and the Truckee Fire Protection District.

Additionally, the Town Council will be hosting public hearings to discuss the ordinance readings and adoption, ensuring transparency and community engagement throughout the process.

Implications for Residents

The adoption of updated FHSZs carries several implications including, but not limited to:

  • Building Codes: Properties within designated zones may be subject to specific building codes aimed at enhancing fire resistance.
  • Real Estate Disclosures: Sellers may be required to disclose a property's location within a fire hazard zone during real estate transactions including a required defensible space inspection.
  • Defensible Space Requirements: Homeowners might need to implement measures to create defensible space around structures on their property, reducing fire risk.

For a comprehensive understanding of these requirements, residents can refer to the Local Responsibility Area Fire Hazard Severity Zone Fact Sheet available on the Town's FHSZ webpage.

Stay Informed

To stay updated on the FHSZ adoption process and related events, residents are encouraged to regularly visit the Town of Truckee's official website and subscribe to official communications related to Disaster Preparedness through the e-notification page. Active community involvement is essential in ensuring that Truckee remains informed and prepared in the face of evolving fire hazards.
